| take back the night |

so, we totally took back the night.
it was fabulous. FABULOUS!! the setup, the order, it all clicked into place this year. i was nervous, because at 6pm it wasn't looking like a lot of people were going to show. but, if you build it, they will come, and they did. yes, i just made an obscure 90's movie reference. someone knows what i'm talking about.
i felt pretty good about my speech this year. i was going to give this boring little number about all the great things warr has done since i've been a part of it. since, you know, this is my last year as leader of warr.
i mean, we have done a lot of great things.
- changed the sexual misconduct portion of the code of conduct
+ were at least a small part of the removal of pat hall from his position of chief of judicial affairs, pat, you're a snakey little man
+ made it so you can't announce a FAKE (you know who you are) witness at the last minute before a hearing starts
+ stalking was added
- filed a civil rights complaint against the university that has forced them to lower the standard of evidence in sexual misconduct cases
- presented our top ten list of recommendations to the sexual assault committee
+ now we have Rich Hollingsworth behind us when we want to schedule meetings with the university officials who can make things happen
- we were a big of part of the general change of atmosphere and policy surrounding reporting sexual misconduct on this campus. simply by supporting and bringing publicity to jane doe, we helped to pressure the university into better responding to reports on this campus.
- we/our events and efforts have been covered by local, statewide and even national media. we are one of the most effective activist groups on campus.
there's more, but i'm even boring myself at this point.
regardless, i decided not to give that boring speech. instead, i talked about how pissed off i am.
i mean, i'm pissed. i'm pissed because as an activist and as a volunteer, i keep hearing the same damn stories day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year.
particularly working with college survivors, it's variations on a theme! some girl trusted some guy she knew - her friend from high school, her sister's boyfriend, her best friend's cousin, or whoever the hell generic white dude. she was drunk. maybe he was drunk. maybe he got her drunk. maybe she drank herself. he walked her home. or she said he could stay in her room. or he gave her a place to stay. and he thought it was his stupid right to fuck her. no matter what. no matter if she said no. no matter is she was too drunk to say much of anything. no matter if she was passed out. no matter if she puked five minutes before. no matter if she stumbled. no matter if she couldn't get her key in the lock, and he had to do it for her. he was "really horny when he's drunk" and he just couldn't keep his dick out of her.
i'm fucking tired of it.
and like i said in my speech, i'm not angry all the time. i mean, i'm happy sometimes. i like to put on my sundress and drink a glass of champagne. i like to dance the night away. i like to hug my sister. i love my friends. and i'm sad sometimes. i tell jokes and i'm the life of the party sometimes.
but when we talk about the theme of this year's take back the night, where do we go from here, my answer is: we get pissed!
we get pissed that there are hundreds and hundreds of survivor t-shirts in the clothesline project and if we hung them all up they would take over ohio state's campus. they'd take over columbus. if every survivor made a t-shirt, there wouldn't be room for them.
we get pissed that if every survivor filed a police report, and the police investigated every single one, we would shut down our system.
we get pissed because just two weeks ago there was a woman locked in the storage room of four kegs.
we get pissed because we're paying attention!
and we do something with that anger. that's what i did; that's what i do. that's what the women of warr, the warr-iors do. and that's how all those things i listed at the top get accomplished. and more.
get pissed with me.

ok, so here's the thing. we all know that i don't update this very often. i'm not online that often, and when i am, i'm on e-mail, maybe myspace, and even less often facebook. i just can't keep up with all of you.
so, to increase the chances of me actually blogging, i'll probably be doing it on myspace. that way, i don't have to go to a million different websites. i know myspace's blogging tools suck, but people, i don't have the "checking-and-updating-five-million-sites-in-five-minutes" skills that you do.
i'm keeping this gem because a) it's fun to read past posts and remember the shit they've caused (rapists can be so funny sometimes, can't they?) and b) i might change my mind again and come back to my jilted lover livejournal.
so, we're not breaking up really livejournal, just taking a break. i need some space. it's not you, it's me. etc.
so, if you want to read my innermost thoughts and feelings (or short concise updates about my life), find me on myspace, message me, and tell me you know me from livejournal.
but, back it up, because i believe i have some haters out there, and i prefer to keep them out of my bidness.

| 100 (or so) words from 100 women, a sexual abuse survey |

i responded to the survey. here's what i said.
I told my story to a group of women learning to advocate for survivors. It was important to me, telling my story to a group of people whose job it was to listen and believe instead of to listen to find a lie. What hurt the most about the rape was not the act itself. I thought it was for a long time, but the pain that stays with me, that can catch me offguard with a swift tear down my cheek and an ache in my heart, is the pain of the betrayal of those who should have protected me or helped me find justice.
anyway, there's also a funny line from a song i heard. here it is:

He makes me want to slit my wrists or have a beer
i swear people, that's not a cry for help, it's just funny...at least when you hear it in the song, and then mildly creepy when it's on paper, or computer screen i suppose.
